I think it’s pretty impressive that GM is still building their own in house transmissions. Yes, this was built with Ford, but their 8-speed is in house as well.
GM has to be one of the few companies out there still both designing and building transmissions in house.

Not really, it’s more of a change in valving than actual planetary sets. I’ve heard that current ZF 8-speeds could theoretically run as 12 speeds.

Odd things, automatics.
Six speeds have four gear sets as do 7,8,9 and 10. You could indeed go higher, at least in theory.
You can get 15 speed hub gears for bikes that use only three gear sets, because witchcraft.

Honda and Mercedes being two others. Most car makers do their own manuals though.
